The Pay Commission is set up by the Government of India at a specific interval and it gives recommendations regarding changes in the salary structure of its employees. Since the Indian Independence in 1947, seven such pay commissions have been set up on a regular basis. This is so that the committee can review and make recommendations about the work and pay structure for all civil and military divisions of the Government of India.
The most recent Pay Commission process was initiated by the Government of India to constitute the 7th Central Pay Commission along with finalization of its Terms of Reference, the composition of the Report and the possible timeframe for submission of the same.
The 7th Pay Commission will submit the report to the Finance Minister, Mr. Arun Jaitley on Thursday recommends an increase in the remuneration of both central government employees as well as for the pensioners.
The commission’s chairman Justice A K Mathur told that they have the report ready and will be submitting it on November 19th.
The Commission was set up in February 2014 to revise the remuneration of approximately 48 lakh central government employees and about 55 lakh pensioners.
The recommendations of the committee will also have a bearing on the salaries of the Saff of state government.
The Union Cabinet has extended the term of the panel in August by four months, until December.
Government constitutes the pay commission in an interval of about every 10 years to revise the pay scale of its employees. These revisions are often adopted by states after some modifications.
As part of this process, the commission holds discussions with various stakeholders, which includes organizations, federations and groups representing civil employees as well as defense services.
The recommendations of the Seventh Pay Commission are scheduled so as to take effect on January 1, 2016.
Besides the chairman, other members of the commission include a retired IAS officer of 1978 batch named Vivek Rea, an economist, Rathin Roy and Meena Agarwal who is secretary of the commission.
