Electronic Verification System for verification of e-filed Income Tax Returns

CBDT has launched Electronic Verification System for verification of e-filed Income tax returns with a One-Time Password (OTP) called ‘Electronic Verification Code (EVC)’. This facility of the ITD completely eliminates the process of sending the paper copy of ITR-V acknowledgement to the ITD CPC based in Bengaluru.

What is EVC:

‘Electronic Verification Code (EVC)’ is a code generated for verifying the identity of the person furnishing Income Tax returns electronically.

EVC can be used by a verifier being an Individual to verify his Income Tax Returns or that of an HUF of which he is a Karta in ITR form 1, 2, 2A, 3, 4 or 4S or the Income Tax Return Form filed in ITR 5 or 7 of any person accordance with Section 140 of the Income Tax Act.

Process of EVC:

ITD has categorised the verification of returns filed as low risk factor where the Total Income is within Rs 5 Lakhs with No refund claimed, and returns having Total income about Rs 5 Lakhs or any refund claimed.

In case of low risk category, after uploading the ITR, a 10 digit alphanumeric EVC number will be sent to Assessee’s registered mobile number and email id. Assessees have to e-Verify Return by providing the same and then download the Acknowledgement only for reference. The EVC can also be generated later by logging into ITR e-filing website >> e-File >> Generate EVC.

The returns with Total Income above Rs 5 Lakhs or if any refund claimed, the EVC has to be generated using any of the following methods:

  • Generate EVC through NetBanking
  • Generate EVC through Bank ATM
  • Generate Aadhaar OTP to verify Return

Generate EVC through NetBanking:
After uploading the ITR, select option ‘Generate EVC through NetBanking’, select Bank Name from the list and provide NetBanking login credentials to login. After login, on selecting ‘IT returns’, assessee will be redirected to ITD e-filing portal, where return can be e-verified.

Assessee can also generate EVC later, by directly logging into NetBanking, navigate to e-Filing  portal, and e-Verify return.

Generate EVC through ATM of a Bank:
Assessee can also generate EVC using Automatic Teller  Machine (ATM) of Bank by selecting ‘Generate EVC for Income Tax Return Filing’ option on the ATM screen. The Bank will place request to ITD e-Filing website which will generate the EVC and send the EVC to registered mobile number. The same can be verified in e-Filing portal under e-File menu.

Generate Aadhaar OTP to verify Return: Assessee has to link his/her Aadhaar number with the PAN on the ITD e-Filing portal, which will be verified on Name, Date of Birth and Gender. After uploading the ITR, on selecting the ‘Aadhaar OTP’ option, an OTP will be generated and sent to mobile number of verifier registered with UIDAI, the same can be used to e-verify assessee’s IT return.

The Aadhaar OTP as ECV will be valid for 10 minutes or as specified by UIDAI.

Other Points on EVC:

  • EVC generated will be valid till 72 hours (Except Aadhaar OTP)
  • EVC would be unique for an Assessee PAN and will not be valid for any other PAN at the time of filing of IT returns.
  • One EVC can be used to validate one return of the Assessee irrespective of the Assessment Year and Type of Return (Original or Revised).
  • EVC will be stored against assessee PAN along with other Verification details
  • EVC can be generated multiple times
  • Once e-Verification is done using EVC, no further action is required from Assessee.

    My Pan Number is BJZPK4415N am filed income tax on 21/07/2016 , but my refund for the year Assessment year 2016-2017 was not credited to my bank account. In online checking it shows pending for verification. please verify .
